Migraine Prevention - Does Hypnosis Work?

by Fleur Moir-Jones

Hypnosis has been successfully used in pain management for several decades. This has been scientifically proven on many occasions by the medical establishment. The effectiveness of being treated with hypnosis depends on several factors, one of which is the type of pain it is. Acute pain (such as that suffered by migraines) is best treated by hypnosis.

Anxiety relief and reducing the prominence of pain are best served by hypnosis. In a nutshell, if you can believe that the pain is an irrelevance and does not control your thoughts and feelings then you can live your life and not be burdened with illnesses and ailments. The medical fraternity have concluded migraine hypnosis can do just that.

It has been determined through research that hypnosis is universally successful as a pain management tool. It is important before reading further to understand that hypnosis is not a cure. Undergoing migraine hypnosis is not going to cure you of a possible tumor causing your migraines. Hypnosis is not a cure, but it is effective treatment and in the event that a tumor is causing your migraines, is a wonderful compliment to other treatments without side effects.

It would be great if there was a permanent cure for migraine headaches. No more migraine of course means no more crippling migraine pain. Sadly, no such miracle cure currently exists. The only thing that a migraine sufferer can rely on is recognising the symptoms early enough to nip the attack in the bud and hope it won’t be too severe.

Some scientific journals have printed articles that suggest hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood treatments for pain management. While it is generally understood that hypnosis works in pain management, it is not fully understood how. It is believed that the power of suggestion is strong enough under hypnosis that you can ignore and conquer pain. You can also learn to shift the pain outward rather than internalize it so that it becomes easier to cope with.

Hypnosis can be applied to a huge list of ailments - not just migraine headaches. Unlike using certain prescription medications, there are no side effects when using hypnosis.

Some of the drugs which are prescribed over the counter for migraine can leave people the worse for wear. People have reported all sorts of symptoms for the drugs themselves such as replacing the nausea one feels from a migraine headache with another form of sickness.

Hypnosis is an option to seriously look at if you have tried pain medications and reacted poorly to them.

If you are experiencing migraines and feel like nothing has helped, talk to your doctor about migraine hypnosis as an alternative treatment. He or she may be able to suggest a reputable hypnotist in your area and with the doctor’s recommendation for a specialist treatment, your insurance will probably pay all or a portion of the cost of going to a hypnotist.

There is no reason to continue living with the kind of pain migraines create when there is a viable alternative that is effective without side effects. Talk to your doctor about migraine hypnosis today.
